Outages.io installation error

Post by rfajman »

I'm trying to install outages.io, but the installation fails, saying that maybe I wasn't an administrator
(I was) or maybe the software had been installed before (it hadn't been,
but that's an odd complaint, as most software can be installed over
itself). As suggested, I looked at the log file. Like most log files,
it's clear as mud unless you are very familiar with the program, but it
seems to be complaining about being unable to install
vc_redist_V140.x64.exe, with the error code 0x80070666, which appears to
mean that the product is already installed. I do have what I thought at
the time I installed them were the latest of each Visual C++ 20yy Redistributable Package,
as I have quite a few products that require one version or another of that.
Microsoft doesn't make it very easy to tell which version of the same file
is the most recent. I think we are talking Visual C++ 2015 here. The version
of the redistributable package that I have is Update 3.

You won't let me attach the log file with the extension I am using, so here it is:

Hi,

To prevent spammers from going crazy, we moderate the first post. You'll be able to attach now that you've been approved.

The installer should uninstall but we prefer to let people know that they should check because in some cases, it wasn't able to. There are endless combinations of software that can be installed on any PC so anything could happen, and does :).

>Install fails with this error 0x80070666.

The problem seems to be related to Windows VC version/s installed. I think you'll have to post this in the Microsoft forums because it appears to be an MS problem.

Not trying to pass the buck, just trying to help because I don't know and there are no developers on hand right now.

I found this if it helps at all.

OK, I made some progress. Based on what you said and several other things, I decided to uninstall all the various versions of the Visual C++ Redistributable for 2015 and later. Then the installation of outages.io proceeded further but got another error, 0x80070643, which is a problem with .NET Framework. .NET Framework is built into Windows 10, so I can't just uninstall it. I did turn it off, but that made no difference. The log is attached.

Glad to hear you're making some progress.

I don't want to cause you any more confusion but let me share something.
Earlier this year, we put out a version of the agent which would not run on any Windows version unless people installed this package.

http://dl.echonets.com/VC_redist.14.23.27820.0.x64.zip

Microsoft had made some changes where we were not yet able to include everything needed in the installation package.
Once they installed this, things seemed to work. According to the Windows developer, this file was/is no longer needed with the current version of the agent for Windows.

However, I just wonder if for some reason, this is what you need.

Well, I'll give it a try, but I don't have high hopes. That version of the Visual C++ Redistributable (14.23.27820.0.x64) is the one that is supposed to support Visual C++ 2015, 2017, and 2019. I had it installed, but it was one of those I removed to get past the first error. I probably had some others installed too, so that might make a difference. But I had seemed to be past the Visual C++ problem and into a different .NET problem.

The above was from 8 hours ago before Firefox began giving me trouble. I did try uninstalling the file that I had and installed yours. As I expected, it made no difference. I got the same error. Googling the error code turned up a few suggested fixes. I haven't had a chance to try them yet.

I'm sorry to read that you are still experiencing problems. I hope we'll have someone on staff to handle MS related questions in the future.

Do I understand correctly that you are saying that no one will be able to consider my problem until some time in the indefinite future when your company might hire someone with the necessary knowledge? If so, that's really amazing for a company with a product that supposedly runs on Windows. If not, then please explain what you do mean.

We have a developer that works on the agent when needed. We do not have this person on as full time staff.
Other than some code we'd like to remove to optimize the agent, it works perfectly and having someone full time for this would not be cost efficient.

Your case is rare considering how often the agent is installed on Windows on a daily basis. The problems are usually never the agent itself but something on the PC being installed on. For example, if you have another PC, you could try installing on that one and chances are good that it will work just fine.

It's impossible to know all of the combinations of software out there and in this situation, it does not seem to be the installer itself. I will reach out to the dev but it will take some time to get a reply because he is now busy on a very large project.

It's certainly possible as I do have a lot of stuff on my machine. Here's a list of Microsoft things I had installed:

Microsoft .NET Execution Environment (DNX) 1-rc1 (x64) for .NET Core
Microsoft .NET Execution Environment (DNX) 1-rc1 (x64) for .NET Framework 4.6
Microsoft .NET Version Manager (x64) 1.0.0-rc1
Microsoft Access database engine 2010 (English)
Microsoft ASP.NET 5 RC1 Update 1
Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 2
Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 4 Runtime
Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (6.3.8450.1000)
Microsoft Expression Web 4

Of course, I have a lot of non-Microsoft things too.

The first three on the list seemed interesting. I uninstalled them, but it made no difference.

I suppose I could uninstall some of the .NET updates. Perhaps your part-time developer might have some thoughts.

I can't help but point out, since you said that no one else has had this problem installing your product on Windows, that I have 394 (actually somewhat more, because I'm not counting things that don't require installation) non-Microsoft products installed on my machine (yes, that is definitely a lot) and none of them have had anything like this sort of problem.
